Medical Conditions That Produce Anxiety Symptoms Similar to Those of Agoraphobia

By: Stephen Price

If you suspect you have agoraphobia or any other anxiety disorder you should get a complete physical examination from a doctor to rule out possible medical causes of the symptoms.

If your anxiety is related to a medical condition then you don’t have agoraphobia or a psychological disorder. Instead, you have what is called an organic anxiety disorder. Medical conditions that can cause anxiety symptoms are:

• hormonal disorders like hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism
• cardio-vascular problems
• respiratory problems like asthma
• premenstrual syndrome and menopause
• blood disorders
• diabetes
• seizures
• inner ear problems
• some allergies.

Of course, anxiety is not the only symptom of these disorders. Consulting a doctor to rule out potential medical causes is the only way to know for sure if you really have agoraphobia or if you have a physical problem requiring medical treatment.
