Agoraphobia and Depression

By: Stephen Price

Agoraphobia has a strong association with depression. A person with agoraphobia is likely to experience depression during more than 50% of his or her disorder. This may be because anxiety and depression are complementary. When anxiety levels go up, levels of depression go down. When levels of depression go up, anxiety levels go down.

The complementary relationship between anxiety and depression is explainable because anxiety is produced by fearing a negative event before it happens and depression is related to feeling bad about a negative event after it happens. As a result, many people with agoraphobia experience depression between their episodes of anxiety and panic.
